This guide is written for people with zero programming experience. If you can type and click a mouse, you can follow along. The whole process takes about one afternoon.

Overview: What Are We Building?

End goal: a website at your own domain (e.g. www.yourname.com), hosted on GitHub Pages, completely free (except the domain itself, ~$10–15/year).

The tech stack is simple:

You do not need to write code yourself — the AI writes it for you. Your role is more like a “project manager”: describe what you want, and the AI executes.


Step 1: Buy a Domain

A domain is your website’s address. Two recommended registrars:

  • Namecheap: Affordable, friendly UI. A .com domain typically costs $9–12 for the first year.
  • Squarespace Domains: Cleaner interface, slightly more expensive (~$20/yr).

Instructions (using Namecheap):

  1. Go to namecheap.com and type your desired domain (e.g. yourname.com) in the search box.
  2. If available, click “Add to Cart” → checkout → create an account → pay.
  3. After purchase, go to Domain List → click your domain → you’ll see Nameservers and Advanced DNS tabs. Remember this page — you’ll come back in Step 8.

💡 Tip: Stick with .com. If your name is taken, try adding a middle initial or field abbreviation (e.g. yourname-math.com).


Step 2: Install VS Code

Visual Studio Code (VS Code) is a free code editor by Microsoft. It’s also the home for Cline, your AI assistant.

  1. Go to code.visualstudio.com and click “Download”.
  2. Install it (macOS: drag to Applications; Windows: click Next through the wizard).
  3. Open VS Code — you’ll see a clean editor interface.

You don’t need to understand any editor features yet. It’s just the AI assistant’s “home”.


Step 3: Install the Cline Extension

Cline is a VS Code extension that lets AI read/write files and run commands directly on your computer. Think of it as “a programmer sitting inside your machine”.

  1. In VS Code, click the Extensions icon in the left sidebar (four squares, shortcut Cmd+Shift+X / Ctrl+Shift+X).
  2. Search for “Cline”, find the one by saoudrizwan, click Install.
  3. After installation, a Cline icon (robot-like) appears in the sidebar. Click it.
  4. On first launch, it will ask you to configure an AI provider (next step).

Step 4: Configure an AI API

Cline needs a “brain”. Two excellent and affordable options:

  1. Go to platform.deepseek.com and sign up.
  2. Go to API Keys → “Create API Key” → copy the key (starts with sk-).
  3. Top up ¥10 (~$1.5) in the billing page — enough for a long time.
  4. Back in VS Code → Cline panel → Settings → choose OpenAI Compatible provider:
    • API Key: paste your key
    • Base URL: https://api.deepseek.com
    • Model ID: deepseek-chat

Option B: Qwen (Tongyi Qianwen) API

  1. Go to Alibaba Cloud Bailian and log in with Alipay/Taobao.
  2. Go to API-KEY Management → create a key.
  3. New users usually get free credits.
  4. In Cline settings, choose OpenAI Compatible:
    • API Key: paste your key
    • Base URL: https://dashscope.aliyuncs.com/compatible-mode/v1
    • Model ID: qwen-plus

💡 Both use the OpenAI-compatible format, so Cline configuration is identical. DeepSeek is cheaper; Qwen has slightly stronger Chinese comprehension. Either works.


Step 5: Build the Website

Now the fun part. In Cline’s chat box, describe what you want in plain language.

5.1 Create the Project

Type in Cline’s chat:

Create a Hugo website in the current directory using the PaperMod theme.
Site title: "Your Name | Your Field", baseURL: "https://www.yourname.com/".

Cline will automatically:

  • Install Hugo (if not already on your machine)
  • Create the project structure
  • Download the PaperMod theme
  • Generate the config file hugo.toml

5.2 Add Pages

Continue telling Cline:

Create the following pages:
- About: a short bio
- Research: list research interests
- Teaching: list TA/course experience
- Notes (blog): for writing articles
Add navigation menu links for all of them.

5.3 Write Your First Post

Create a post at content/notes/hello-world.md,
title "Hello, World", with a few test sentences.

5.4 Customize Styling (Optional)

Customize the PaperMod theme colors and fonts
to make it look like a clean academic website.

💡 You don’t need to say everything at once. Chat with Cline iteratively — after each change, refresh your browser to see the result.


Step 6: Local Testing

In VS Code’s terminal (menu: Terminal → New Terminal), run:

hugo server -D

Then open http://localhost:1313 in your browser. You’ll see a live preview — any file change auto-refreshes.

Checklist:

  • Homepage displays correctly
  • All nav links work
  • Post pages render properly
  • Mobile view (F12 → device emulation) looks good

When satisfied, press Ctrl+C to stop the server.


Step 7: Deploy to GitHub Pages

7.1 Create a GitHub Repository

  1. Go to github.com, sign up / log in.
  2. Click “+” → New repository.
  3. Name it anything (e.g. my-academic-site). Important: you must set it to Public — GitHub Pages is only available for public repositories on the free plan.
  4. After creation, in VS Code terminal:
git init
git add -A
git commit -m "Initial commit"
git branch -M main
git remote add origin https://github.com/YOUR_USERNAME/my-academic-site.git
git push -u origin main

(Or just tell Cline: “Initialize git and push to GitHub for me.”)

7.2 Set Up GitHub Actions Auto-Deploy

Tell Cline:

Create a GitHub Actions workflow that builds with Hugo
and deploys to GitHub Pages on every push to main.

It creates .github/workflows/hugo.yml. After pushing, go to your repo → SettingsPages → Source: GitHub Actions.

Wait a few minutes — your site appears at https://YOUR_USERNAME.github.io/my-academic-site/.

7.3 Bind Your Custom Domain

  1. Repo → SettingsPagesCustom domain: enter www.yourname.com → Save.
  2. Check Enforce HTTPS.
  3. Create a static/CNAME file containing www.yourname.com (tell Cline: “Create static/CNAME with content www.yourname.com”).

Step 8: DNS Configuration

Go back to your domain registrar (Namecheap → Domain List → your domain → Advanced DNS).

Add these records:

After saving, DNS propagation takes 10 minutes to 48 hours (usually under 1 hour).


Step 9: Verify & Test

Once DNS propagates, check each item:

  1. Browser: Open https://www.yourname.com — see your site? ✅
  2. HTTPS: Padlock icon in the address bar? ✅ (GitHub auto-issues Let’s Encrypt certs)
  3. Command line (optional, in terminal):

  1. Global reachability: Open whatsmydns.net, enter your domain, check worldwide DNS sync.
  2. Mobile test: Open your domain on your phone’s browser (turn off Wi-Fi, use cellular).

FAQ

Q: I truly cannot code. Can I really do this? A: Yes. Every “technical operation” in this guide can be done by telling Cline one sentence. Your job is to describe what you want.

Q: I don’t understand the code the AI writes. What do I do? A: You don’t need to understand it. Like driving a car without understanding the engine. If something breaks, paste the error to Cline — it will fix it.

Q: How much does this cost per year? A: Domain ~$10–15. Hosting free (GitHub Pages). AI API a few cents per month. Total under $20/year.

Q: How do I update content later? A: Open the .md file in VS Code, edit, save, then git add -A && git commit -m "update" && git push. Or tell Cline: “Change the second paragraph of my About page to…”
